You’ve got questions. We’ve got 570,000+ matches of data and answers to go with them. Whether you just discovered SaltyBet five minutes ago or you’ve been lurking in chat for years, this FAQ covers the stuff people actually ask about — from the basics to the weirdly specific.

Getting Started

What is SaltyBet?

SaltyBet is a free, 24/7 betting platform where AI-controlled MUGEN fighting game characters battle each other on a Twitch livestream. You bet virtual currency (Salty Bucks, NO actual value) on who you think will win. The fights never stop, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. No human players, no esports pros, just thousands of community-created characters throwing hands while you try to figure out who’s going to win.

Is SaltyBet gambling?

No. SaltyBet uses virtual currency only. Salty Bucks cannot be bought, sold, or exchanged for real money. There is no monetary value at stake. It’s a free entertainment platform. You start with $400 Salty Bucks and that’s your whole economy.

How do I start?

Go to saltybet.com, create a free account (takes 30 seconds), and you’ll get $400 Salty Bucks to play with. Before each match there’s a betting window — pick Red or Blue, enter your amount, and lock it in. That’s it. You’re in the game.

Do I need a Twitch account?

You need a SaltyBet account (free) to place bets. The stream itself is viewable without logging in. You can watch without betting, but where’s the fun in that?

Can I play on mobile?

You can watch the stream on mobile, but the betting interface works best on desktop. The SaltyTrack Chrome extension is desktop-only at the moment.

Is SaltyBet free?

Yes. Completely free to play and watch. There’s an optional paid membership called the Salty Illuminati that unlocks extra features, exhibition match requests, and a larger bailout amount. But it’s not required — the full betting experience is free.

Betting & Currency

What are Salty Bucks?

SaltyBet’s virtual currency. Everyone starts with $400 when they sign up (if memory serves). You can’t buy more with real money. You can’t sell them. You can’t trade them. They exist purely for bragging rights and the thrill of the bet, but mostly bragging rights.

What happens when I lose all my Salty Bucks?

Welcome to the salt mines! You’ll receive a small bailout — starts low, I think around $100 (don’t quote me) for new accounts and increases as you level up from placing more bets. It’s enough to start rebuilding. Being broke is a rite of passage. Chat will not be sympathetic.

How does betting work?

Before each match, there’s a betting window, about 60 seconds. You see the two fighters’ names and pick a side — Red or Blue. Enter your bet amount ($1 minimum) and lock it in. Only your most recent bet counts, so you can change your mind while the window is still open. Once betting closes, the fight begins and you can’t change anything.

What’s a “pot”?

The total amount of Salty Bucks wagered on a match by both sides combined. Across our dataset, the average pot is about $7.9 million. X-tier championship matches average $10.5 million. The biggest pot we’ve recorded was $103.3 million — in P-tier, of all places.

Does the side with more money always win?

The favorite (side with more Salty Bucks wagered) wins 67.9% of the time across 570,000+ matches. That’s a strong signal, but it means the underdog still wins about one in three fights. The catch? You don’t see which side the crowd picked until after your bet is locked in. That’s where tools like SaltyTrack come in.

What’s the best betting strategy?

There’s no magic formula, but here’s what the data tells us: don’t bet your whole stack on any single fight. Bet sizing matters more than pick accuracy over time. Higher-tier fights (X, S) are more predictable. A-tier and B-tier are chaos. If a fighter has an 85%+ win rate across 200 matches, that means something — their AI is consistently good. History matters because fighters don’t change between matches.

Can I change my bet after placing it?

Yes, as long as the betting window is still open. Only your most recent bet counts. Once the window closes, you’re locked in.

Fighters & Tiers

How many fighters are there?

Over 10,000 unique fighters in the SaltyBet roster. Our dataset has recorded 10,257 unique fighters across 570,000+ matches. The roster gets updated by the site administrators — new characters appear and old ones sometimes get rebalanced.

What are the tiers?

SaltyBet organizes fighters into five tiers based on power level:

How do fighters move between tiers?

By winning or losing 15 consecutive matches. Win 15 in a row and you move up. Lose 15 in a row and you move down. X-tier is the exception — placement is handled manually by the SaltyBet admins for characters deemed overpowered.

Why do some fighters seem broken?

Because they are! Some hilariously so, though I confess, it’s not so funny when your funny moniez are on the line. MUGEN characters are created by fans with wildly different levels of skill and intent. Some characters are intentionally overpowered. Some have infinite combos. Some have one-hit KO moves. Some just stand there and do nothing. It’s part of the charm — and part of what makes prediction so interesting.

Who are the best fighters?

Among fighters with 50+ matches in our dataset, at the time of writing K9999-ex holds the highest win rate at 92.7% (51-4) in X-tier. In S-tier, Shiva-hell (89.5%, 204-24) and Element -a- (89.1%, 171-21) are dominant. Nine of the top ten highest win-rate fighters are S-tier. You can look up any fighter’s stats on saltytrack.com.

What’s the biggest upset in SaltyBet history?

Miduma defeating Remy at 428:1 odds in B-tier. The crowd had 428 times more money on Remy and Miduma still won. Classic B-tier.

Does Red or Blue win more?

Barely matters, but for those who need to know: across 570,000 matches, Red wins 49.2% and Blue wins 50.8%. That’s statistical noise. If your strategy is “always bet one color” — you don’t have a strategy.

Match Formats

What are the different match types?

SaltyBet cycles through three modes on repeat:

  1. Matchmaking (86.9% of matches) — Two fighters randomly selected and paired up. Standard mode. Average pot: $9 million.
  2. Tournament (13.1% of matches) — 16-fighter elimination bracket. You get a tournament-specific balance so your main stack isn’t at risk. Tournaments rotate through B, A, and S tier.
  3. Exhibition — Special showcase matches between cycles. Can feature unusual matchups.

The cycle goes: 100 matchmaking rounds → 16-character tournament → 25 exhibition matches → repeat.

Do matchmaking and tournament fights play differently?

The fights themselves are the same — AI vs AI, same MUGEN engine. But the betting dynamics are different. Matchmaking pots average $9 million. Tournament pots average $779,000 — about 12x less, since these have their own separate wallets. Tournament matches also use a separate balance, so they’re lower-risk for your main stack.

SaltyTrack

What is SaltyTrack?

SaltyTrack is a free Chrome extension and website that provides AI-powered predictions, fighter statistics, win rates, and head-to-head records for SaltyBet matches. We’ve been tracking SaltyBet since late 2021 and have recorded over 570,000 matches. The extension overlays directly on saltybet.com so you see the data right when you need it — during the betting window.

How accurate is SaltyTrack?

Over the last 90 days across 34,000+ scored matches:

ConfidenceAccuracy
Lock99.8%
High86.8%
Medium70.1%
Low56.0%
Overall72.0%

72% overall, beating the crowd’s 67.9%. When we say “Lock,” we’ve been wrong twice out of 998 predictions. Even our Low confidence predictions hit 56% — six points above a coin flip. For a deeper look, check out How SaltyTrack Predicts Fight Outcomes.

What do the confidence levels mean?

Is SaltyTrack free?

Yes. The Chrome extension and the website are both completely free. No premium tier, no paywalls, no ads in the extension.

How do I install the SaltyTrack extension?

Go to the Chrome Web Store, click “Add to Chrome,” and you’re done. Takes about 10 seconds. The overlay appears automatically when you visit saltybet.com.

Does SaltyTrack work on Firefox or other browsers?

Chrome only at the moment. Any Chromium-based browser (Chrome, Brave, Edge) should work.

Does SaltyTrack auto-bet for me?

Nope, not our bag. SaltyTrack gives you information — predictions, stats, head-to-head records — but it doesn’t place bets automatically. You make the call. We give you the data to make a better one.

Is SaltyTrack affiliated with SaltyBet?

No. SaltyTrack is an independent project. We’re not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to SaltyBet in any way. Big ups to them, and lots of love sent to the SaltyBoy API <3.

MUGEN & Technical

What is MUGEN?

MUGEN (pronounced “moo-gen”) is a free, customizable 2D fighting game engine created by a group called Elecbyte in 1999. The name comes from the Japanese word 無限, meaning “limitless.” It lets anyone create their own fighting game characters with custom sprites, moves, and AI behavior. SaltyBet uses MUGEN as its engine — every fight you see is two MUGEN characters with their built-in AI battling it out. We have a full deep dive on MUGEN if you want the whole story.

Why don’t the fighters change between matches?

Because they’re AI. MUGEN characters have their behavior coded into them — their moves, their stats, how they react to opponents. Unlike human players, they don’t learn, adapt, or practice between fights. This is actually what makes historical data so valuable for prediction. If a fighter has an 87% win rate across 200 matches, that’s not a hot streak — that’s a consistently well-coded AI.

Why do some matches end in one hit?

Some MUGEN characters have one-hit KO (OHKO) moves — a single attack that defeats the opponent regardless of remaining health. These are especially common in X-tier. It’s a feature of the MUGEN engine: character creators can make moves as powerful as they want. When you see a fight end in two seconds, that’s usually an OHKO move in action.

What’s the deal with infinite combos?

Some characters have combo sequences that loop endlessly, trapping the opponent until they’re KO’d. When you see a 99-hit combo on SaltyBet that’s still going, that’s usually an infinite. These are intentional design choices by the character creators. Characters with infinites tend to have high win rates because once they land the first hit, the fight is effectively over.

Can I download MUGEN and play it myself?

Yes! MUGEN is free and always has been. You can download it from elecbyte.com. From there you download characters from community sites, drop them in the chars/ folder, add them to your select.def file, and fight. Fair warning: once you start building a roster, it’s hard to stop.

SaltyBet Chat & Culture

What does “Always bet waifu” mean?

It’s a chat meme suggesting you should always bet on the female-looking character. Does this actually work? Our data says character appearance doesn’t predict outcomes. But it’s one of the most enduring SaltyBet memes, so it’s not going away.

What does “Never bet DBZ” mean?

Another classic chat meme. Dragon Ball Z characters have a reputation for looking powerful but underperforming in SaltyBet. Like all chat wisdom, take it as entertainment rather than strategy.

What are the “salt mines”?

Where you end up when you lose all your Salty Bucks. You’ll get a small bailout to start over. Being in the mines is a rite of passage for any SaltyBet bettor. Most of us have been there. Some of us live there.

What is “Dream Cast Casino”?

SaltyBet’s official branding. You’ll see “Salty’s Dream Cast Casino” during stream intros and transitions. It’s just the name of the show.

What does “real fight” mean in chat?

It means both characters are evenly matched and the outcome is genuinely uncertain. As opposed to the many one-sided beatdowns that happen regularly. When chat says “real fight,” pay attention — those matches are usually worth watching.
